Richmond Castle

One of the most imposing Norman remains in England, towering over the town. With 11thC walls, 12thC rectangular keep is 100ft high and is one of the finest in the country. Original 14thC hall. Legend relates the story of a certain Potter Thompson who explored a secret passage and found himself in a huge cavern under the castle in the company of King Arthur and his knights. Indecisive, he failed to grasp any of the great treasures that lay there (Excalibur?), and fled empty-handed. The story goes that the King and his knights will emerge in England's hour of need.
